The subtext, or silent script, is everything you are not saying verbally, but communicating through your actions. It is an essential and often forgotten dimension of communication, one in which we can create congruence and deep influence. Your inner story. Your meaning and motivation for being there. The background of your mental abilities. The way you relate to what you are doing.

Do you have a clear subtext?

If not, what are you waiting for?

The lack of reflection on this matter is, in itself, a factor that is stopping your development.

That is why, every time I facilitate the “Mentalism Course,” we go deep into the roots of our character as performers, so that everything else that sprouts from those foundations has depth, coherence, and connection.

You are performing a “mindreading trick,” but there is no subtext explaining how or why you are doing it. Most probably, your participant and audience will naturally gravitate toward a logical explanation of the apparent feat.

That’s why Mentalism demands deeper self-knowledge from yourself in order to truly achieve its higher potential. We embrace a fictional role that needs coherence so it can reach the mysterious ambiance needed to facilitate an experience of uncertainty.

That’s also why Mentalism inherently suffers when it becomes too “spectacular.” If you need fire and too much showmanship to perform, most probably people will experience it as a trick act rather than an interaction with someone who possesses unique skills and abilities.

The subtext is as important, and I dare to say even more important, than your spoken words or written script. Only when your intent is clear will your verbal interactions flow naturally as a support for your performance.

"Knowledge, Courage and Practice, Practice, Practice." What a beautiful combination of pursuits, especially if you want to offer Mentalism that goes beyond tricks and superficialities.

Most Q&A students know several methods to get the questions, but almost no methods to offer answers. Well, in Millard's work (and many others, such as Kenton Knepper or Richard Webster), you will find powerful guidance and insights so you can complete the conversation with an intuitive, empathic, and prophetic answer.

In my experience, I had amazing moments in which I didn't "predict the future as a psychic", but opened various doors of possibilities that, through the creative act of language, were created in physical reality. Let me share one example:

I was doing a show for a beautiful young woman and her fiancé years ago. He asked about a trip to Europe to get his doctoral degree. I was doing my Q&A from Telepathic Artifacts, and suddenly I felt the need to say: 

"I feel that this trip will emerge with the need of emotional support. Be sure that as soon as you arrive, create new friends and keep contact with your loved ones."

Well, he did the trip, but alone. His fiancée decided to end the relationship so he could go freely.

Guess what? Years after that, that beautiful young woman became my wife.

Yeah, very weird.

So, how did I do that? Knowledge, Courage, and a lot of Practice, as Millard said. What I said to the participant was really coming from my experience, studies, and kindness to another fellow human being.

Mentalism is not an art per se, in the same way that simply playing an instrument is not Music per se. There are no arts, but artists. Even disciplines that we don't usually consider "arts", such as sports or the sciences, can be seen as arts by people who treat them that way. When someone is brilliant at whatever they do, people often call that person a "Magician" or "Wizard". It looks like every art has a hidden magic that we can uncover through our own unique expression.

Mentalism is entertaining, commercial, and a great show to experience, but it can be more than that. And I dare to say it needs to be more than that.

Sell your show, but also be aware that this space of performance offers a possibility to inspire, uplift, and empower others.

Mentalism is only about "rationality" when we have a limited understanding of what the mind is. Let's go beyond that. Let's touch other people's souls. Let's bring a new expansion, a new experience, a moment that can remain in their memories for a lifetime.

Invite people to enjoy wonder, to embrace paradoxes, and to experience the power of the mind in a tangible way.

This is a fascinating idea, especially coming from the author of "Wonder Words." There is a beautiful humility in realizing that the deepest forms of connection and communication transcend verbal language.

The Unknowable element of every performance needs air. It needs space. It needs what appears to be nothing, yet is filled with something we cannot name. A secret that cannot be told.

The book is divided into three chapters, each presenting different approaches to mentalism using only objects that can comfortably fit inside a wallet. From thought-of card predictions to drawing duplications, ESP card routines, and even personality readings, everything revolves around a very specific philosophy: creating powerful experiences with the fewest possible props.

What I enjoyed most was not any single effect, but the way the book inspires you to see everyday objects and ordinary social situations as opportunities to create a genuine connection with your participant. More than a collection of methods, it conveys a way of thinking about mentalism.

On the downside, I would not recommend it as a first book for someone starting from scratch. Although everything is well explained, many of the ideas are built upon classic mentalism principles, so the material is much more rewarding for readers who already have a solid foundation or, at the very least, a genuine interest in mentalism and the mystery arts.

Overall, Minimal EDC Act is a book that encourages you to look at your wallet in a completely different way. It demonstrates that with creativity, strong presentation, and good ideas, you don't need elaborate props to create memorable experiences. In that respect, I believe it fully achieves its goal.
