The master Bizzarist Tony Andruzzi, claiming a harsh truth, and one that we need to consider to be better Mystery Performers (from this wonderful conversation with Eugene Burger)
Are you just pretending to be Magician/Mentalist, or you are actually one?
What is the meaning of "being" a Mentalist? You need to claim "real psychic powers"?
If you dont have them, of course no. Mystery is not about direct claims but subtle and indirect messages, provocative ideas and possibilities, and that is why we need to learn proper theatrical skills so we can truly embody our role and not just offering a fake simulation.
The line between acting and over-acting can be very thin, and thats exactly why we need to learn how to communicate our message in a convincing way. If we "try too hard" we will be seen as a fake and comical attempt, which is not what Mentalism is about.
It is cool to be an entertainer of course, and if that is your path, go for it, but in here the invitation is different. We can engage our audience into a fascinating conversation through our genuine skills. There is no need of deception at all, quite the contrary, share your artistic vision with sincerity.
If you want to explore these topics in deeper ways, I highly recommend you to check our VideoCourses, especially the "Mentalism as Art" recent one.
