The Professor of Magic, Dai Vernon, offered an interesting insight to reflect on.
Personally, I only care about the experience of my participant and audience — whether that requires a very complex method or a simple one. I can use straightforward sleight of hand or intricate psychological layers; the outer reality is what truly matters.
Techniques are obviously based on personal preference, but also on context. Maybe I love my new peek method, but if the context of my performance is not appropriate for it, then I need a different one. That’s why knowing many different approaches is always valuable.
What unimportant thing are you currently mistaking for something important?
Do you really need that “latest and greatest” product the mainstream marketplace is pushing you to buy? Your audience doesn’t know which method you use — they can only appreciate the beauty of the performance.
Is your performance beautiful?
I hope so. If not, you’re invited to check out our video lecture “Mentalism as Art”, so you can truly focus your time, money, and energy in wiser ways.
