A powerful insight from the master himself, alluding to our need of true excellence in order to achieve the greatest impact possible with our Mentalism.
What is the difference between playing FOR the audience instead TO as he says?
Because our focus most of the time is placed on the rigid aspects of performing, such as core method and "instructive scripting" (just saying the needed words to achieve the end result) we lose the uniqueness of each experience. We treat every audience if they are all the same, and thats a huge mistake.
Every audience is different, every participant is different, so that basic preparation is not enough. We need to prepare all those fundamentals of course but that is just the beginning! After learning the core method we need to explore subtlety and sophistication so we can cancel the method used. After understanding the basic verbal instructions we need to explore psychological and lingustic touches so our core method becomes enhanced, and after this comes all the needed rehearsal so our acting is properly dramatic and empowered.
That is why Ted says that most Mystery Performers are poor actors. We need to learn how to accentuate moments, how to use the space (staging), how to apply silence in order to create expectation, and learn theatrical techniques for all this.
If you are interested in exploring your deeper potential as Mentalist be sure to learn theatrics, but if you want to learn in a direct and simple way, check our Video Lessons and Online Courses, especially the "Rehearsal" and "Scripting" for Mystery Performers. They show you how to act as a Mentalist by preparing your actions and communication in a proper manner.
You dont need to be an "actor" but you need to act as a Mentalist in order to do Mentalism.
