Years ago, when I did my Penguin Lecture, "Minimal Mentalism," Dan Harlan told me:
"Your next one can be about Maximalist Mentalism."
Wow, what a fantastic idea.
Since that conversation, I started studying this possibility and discovering the value this concept can bring to our mysterious performances.
In my Mentalism explorations, I have always found tremendous value in Minimalism: simplicity in the experience, clear scripts pruned of unnecessary words and moments, a direct narrative with no distractions, and so on.
But what happens with Maximalism? Is there a virtue in that possibility? Through the Birreal Paradigm, I believe the answer is yes.
Inner Minimalism – Outer Maximalism
Simple method, direct script, amazing showmanship, colorful props, rich stories, entertainment, and mysterious impact.
Inner Maximalism – Outer Minimalism
Complex method, deep preparation, and a flowing experience of mysterious conversation with no apparent effort. Invisible props, secret gimmicks.
Neither is better than the other. They are simply different possibilities to explore.
Embracing both Maximalism and Minimalism is a fantastic path for every Mystery Performer.
